Discovery has filed a lawsuit against 2 brothers on the show Deadliest Catch. The brothers, Jonathan and Andy Hillstrand, allegedly failed to complete interviews for an upcoming spin-off project. The project, called Hillstranded, was to document what the brothers are up to when they are not on the ocean fishing for crab. The brothers work aboard the Time Bandit.
Discovery, which is reaping in millions of dollars off the Deadliest Catch show said that because the brothers did not want to return for scheduled interviews, the show stood to lose millions and a highly anticipated project was left in the dust. When Discovery tried to contact the Hillstrands again, their lawyer emailed them back and said the network should not be contacting his clients.
The attorney, Jeff Cohen said, “The recent actions of Discovery Communications are an astonishing and shameful instance of arrogance and greed run amok.” Cohen then continued with, “While CEO David Zaslav reaps a $33.9 million bonanza in a single day in January 2010, his company attempts to bankrupt hardworking fishermen. Three million dollars is exponentially greater than any compensation ever paid to the ‘Deadliest Catch’ captains, and yet this is the figure Discovery is trying to extort from these men“.
Cohen was not finished there as he ripped Discovery about the death of Phil Harris as well saying, “Discovery is a multi-billion dollar corporation making hundreds of millions of dollars from broadcasting the dangerous exploits of our clients. In light of all the tragedy witnessed by Captain Sig (Hansen), Capt. John and Capt. Andy this year, why can’t Discovery let these working men move on with their lives?“

It sure seems like season 7 of Deadliest Catch just ended and season 8 seems so far away. Breaking news that come out today is showing that in the next season one of our favorite boats will not be on the water. The news comes from the owners of the Cornelia Maria fishing boat and they said that due to some mechanical issues and repairs that are needed, the famous fishing boat will be docked for season 12. And if you didn’t know that the Harris’ brothers, Jake and Josh, were not part owners, you know now. The financial future of the boat will also be looked at while it is dry-docked for the season.
Jake and Josh, however, will still be able to work and make some money thanks to some good friends and other boats on the water. There wasn’t any indication that the brothers will be working on the same boat, but they will be able to work nonetheless.
In a note from the official website for the Cornelia Marie said the brothers will be working, “just not on the CM. They are fishermen and like the rest of us, need to work to make money. They are both going to be deckhands on different boats for this year’s opening. Thanks to some good friends in the fleet, they both have jobs this season.“
On a side note about the 8th season was the fact that the total allowable catch for red king crab was cut in half. This is done to allow crabs to grow and keep fisherman from catching juvenile crab. You can read more about this news from the Alaska Dispatch here.
